Honeymoon in Akumal - August, 1998
Dave & Colette,
I just wanted to let you guys know what a great time Joe and I had on our honeymoon. It was a wonderful surprise!
Joe and I have been to the Dominican Republic two years ago and last February, we went to Puerto Vallarta. Both of those trips were all-inclusive packages. We had fun at both of these places but, our last trip to Akumal was by far the best, and I'm not just saying that because it was our honeymoon.
The all-inclusive trips were so structured and the areas were very touristy. Some people like that, but Joe and I like to get up in the morning and decide what we feel like doing that day, instead of booking a tour in advance with a bunch of people we don't know and then spending half the day on a bus.
We were very impressed with the condo. We pretty much had the whole place to ourselves, since we went in August. It was very peaceful and relaxing. We went up on the roof one night and checked out the stars. That was pretty cool.
For our first venture out, we drove to Tulum to see the ruins. You can hire a tour guide there, but we decided to just wander around ourselves. Later on our trip, we drove to Chichen Itza, where we hired our own personal tour guide. That was very interesting! We highly recommend a trip there. On our way back from Chichen Itza, we stopped in Valladolid to see the Cenote X'Keken. It's an underground cenote. That was really cool and, if you go to Chichen Itza, definitely make a stop there!
On another day, we went to Xcaret. That was very disappointing. It's $38 a person to walk around a mini-Busch Gardens. There was a nice lagoon there but, at about noon, it started to get crowed so even that lost its appeal. They had an underground river that you could snorkel in (which was the reason that we went), but that was disappointing also. It was very crowded, so you pretty much went in single file and even then, you end up getting kicked all the way down. Oh, and by the way, you don't see any fish, because it's so dark and there's so many people. Needless to say, that was a waste of time and money. Why spend all that money to snorkel when the best snorkeling is right in front of the condo?
The majority of our trip was spent snorkeling. Joe snapped some awesome underwater pictures. We also spent a lot of time at the cenotes along the road. My favorite was Cenote Azul. It is said to be a perfect circle formed by a meteorite, so deep that no diver has reached the bottom. Cool, huh?
We also spent a lot of time eating, and frequented La Buena Vida. We found the atmosphere there very comfortable and the food was great.
Joe and I had such a great time on our honeymoon at the Penthouse at La Iguana in Akumal that we are going back - this time with six other people! When we were there in August, there was a lot of construction going on. I understand that it is all completed and we are excited to see the finished product.
Thanks for helping make our honeymoon so special and you'll be hearing from us again soon!
